The Makings of a Healthy Foundation - Diet!
This water is for me, right?
Feeding a proper diet, composed of nutritious whole foods, is arguably one of the most powerful ways we can make a positive impact on our pets lives. Luckily, pet foods are becoming more and more appropriate for our beloved cats and dogs. As people are becoming more aware of the importance of good nutrition in their own lives, many pet food companies are finally offering pet foods with better ingredient integrity and species appropriate pet foods.
Dr. Smith is very passionate about encouraging owners to also go through the process of learning what to feed. This includes the fundamentals of what makes a good ingredient list, and being aware of your pet’s changes on different foods. Biologically appropriate for both cats and dogs most certainly includes a carnivorous base of fresh meat with whole fruits, vegetables and sometimes grains. Adhering to these values will help you to find a great food for your own pet!
An ideal to strive for is to eliminate by-products, preservatives, artificial flavors or less described ingredients such as the ever elusive ‘animal fat.’ (Tell us what kind of fat, please!) Proteins should always be described (think chicken, goat, beef, boar) and make up a good deal of the initial list of ingredients.
Still, there are so many options! Dry food? Wet food? Something a little more personal, such as a raw, freeze dried raw or even a home cooked meal each day? It can be overwhelming! Even for us in the veterinary world, diet is a realm of continuous learning and product knowledge. If you would like guidance on what food would be best for your pet, please let us know – we would love to help!
